Issues or Challenges When ICT is Being Integrated In Teaching and Learning Process

The wide using of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is to improve teaching qualities, learning and management in schools as well to help in increasing the level of our country. The using of ICT in schools are applied to the same level as smart schools. Ministry of Education (MOE) in our country never give up to work hard in improving the qualities of ICT in schools and supplying ICT tools in every schools without any differences between the schools in urban area and rural area. Schools behalf also could report any broken in ICT tools to Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah (PPD). This clearly show the concern of MOE toward education in our country. However, many challenges faced by teachers in using ICT for teaching and learning processes.

The first challenges faced to improve the using of ICT in schools refer to the teachers in the schools. Most teachers still did not competent to use ICT in classes. Sometimes, the level of improved ICT tools are very advanced, not suite to the level of teacher’s knowledge on ICT. This matter does not only happend in schools but also in universities which still have some lecturer that always ask students to set up and prepare ICT tools to them. The ICT tools included computer, notebook, laser printer, pencetak dot matrik, pencetak ink, jet, hub and switch. This tools are among of good branded which are great and durable. Based on my experience when I studied in Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) on 2006 and 2007, there are some teachers that never used the ICT tools provided although the tools are complete and in a good condition. Along the moment that i stilled as a secondary students, because I alway keep changing schools, I noticed that the teachers attitude towards ICT are same in every schools that I registered. Most teachers did not want to use the ICT tools that provided to them. I noticed that the ICT tools are keep located near the wall of the class. This situation influenced students to misuse of it. They make it as something to play. This is very wasteless as the price of the ICT tools is high. Although in MRSM, there are still teachers that still use mah-jong paper as the teaching materials. If there any teachers use ICT tools, they spend quite a long period to begin the operation of the tools, this will waste the teaching time.

The next challenges is some teachers misuse the ICT tools. There are some teachers that just start the video/audio based on topic that they want to teach and students are asked to listen to the videos. I still remember when I was in form 4, my physics teachers asked my classmates and I to look and listen to the video on topic that he want to teach. We felt really sleepy as we did not understand the high standard of English the audio used. Lastly, the class end up without any knowledge we got.

Besides that, there are some teachers that did not know how to use software provided in the computer. There are some teachers that still not confident to use Microsoft Office correctly. When they teaching in urban area, most students are more knowledgeable. This make teachers feel shame and give up to use it.
