Comment of Data Logging, Simulation and Modelling

Data logging, simulation and modelling can help students understand better in the topics and make the learning process become interesting and attractive.

  • Data logging is a technology which help students to conduct the experiments more efficient by using data logger device so that the students understand about the significant of data logger in order to get more accurate result and help a lot of data collection. Experiment that involved the release of gas also can be calculated easier. At enhance stage, students can improve their thinking and memorising when answering the tough questions. They can apply their knowledge based on data logger that have been done. This is to ensure the students are active in class especially with data logging learning process.
  • For simulation, students will be more attracted to the topic teached by teachers as the lesson are more interesting showing colourful moving diagram that help they memorize well on the topic. Students will be more understand based on simulation shown by teachers as the simulation could be pause to allow teachers explaining the process while showing the paused diagram. Teachers also may explain step by step clearly. This will help students understand and remember better the topic. Simulation also can show the process that students cannot imagine and see by their naked eyes. Therefore, students will be more understand on the process even they cannot see by their naked eyes. Simulation help the teachers to give the review about the topics and easier teacher to conclude regarding the topics.
  • For modelling, the lesson will be more attractive which students could see the changes in variable of certain experiment clearly. Teachers may change the variable by themselves and show the students the effects on the experiment. This will let students understand better on the topic.
  • There are some problems integrating the use of data logging, simulation and modelling. The main problem is when the teachers did not know how to use and handle the programs properly. Then, when the teachers make a mistake when using the technology, they are easy to give up and did not want to use it again. The difficulties of teachers in handling this device affect the student’s interest to learn the topics.
  • There are some suggestion to solve the following problems. First, all teachers need to learn on how to use the technology correctly and wisely. Teachers must competent in handling all tools to improve the learning process so that the students can get benefits and attracted. Interest on using the technology also have to be put on teachers to make sure they are not give up to use it.

Values and Difficulties

  • The values are the teaching and learning process will be done more efficiently which students will learn better, understand better and work with it better.
  • The teaching and learning process also will become more interesting toward the teachers and students.
  • Students will be more attracted to education.
  • Difficulties during the implementation of this model more towards the teacher as the teachers are the important person to handle this well.
  • Teachers must know how to elicit the student knowledge about the topics using engage model.
  • Teachers cannot make mistakes which may influenced students thinkings and make them confused. If the students cannot understand the engage’s question, situation or pictures that teachers provided, then teacher get trouble to correct the students thinking.
  • Teachers are responsible to make sure the students’ misconception on the topic.
  • teacher must know how to use the data logger correctly and properly to ensure that there are no problem in teaching to students.

Engage, Empower, Enhance

During the lesson in this course, there are many new things exposed to me. I feel glad to be the members of ICT class. In ICT class, we have been introduced toward Engage, Empower and Enhance. All the three are different things.

  • Engage, empower and enhance model in data logger process, have a lot of benefits to students and teachers.
  • Date logger is used in teaching and learning especially to do experiment. By using data logger during an experiment, the data collections more accurate in aspects of results, tabulated data and can make discussion during experiment in progress. Besides that, if the experiment involved products that we cannot count by our naked eyes, data logger is the best solution.
  • There are many sensor that can be use in the experiment.
  • For engage process, as a teacher, we have to give some situation regarding to the topic that we want to teach to the students to elicit their prior knowledge on the topic
  • . Engage process helps students to think and gives their ideas about the questions and situation given and make them remember their previous knowledge.
  • Empower model helps students and teacher to conduct any experiment easily using the sensor involved.
  • An accurate result with graph provided will be obtained.
  • Less error done compared to an experiment that being done in normal way.
  • For enhance model, the question must be more challenging than in engage.
  • Test wheter students understand the concept or not before answer enhance questions.
  • It helps the student to understand better about the topics after engage and empower process being introduced.

My Teaching Philosophy

As an Educator, I have my own perception toward students and education. Every students have their own ability and interest in education. They have their own strategy to strive success in their academic. As a teacher, one of my principle is to know all of my students and I'll treat them same regardlessly their background, gender, intelligence and personal attractiveness. I must know my students skills, problems, their interest to attend classes, their expectation about the class, their needs and their mission in academic. Besides that, as a teacher, i need to :
  • Create wonderful and interesting teaching and learning environment in class
  • Use ICT tools and application in teaching and learning to make students understand in the topics taught to them and can remember well as I will use colourful animation for the topics
  • have well preparation before start teaching. (materials, contents, games)
  • help students in their problems whether in academic or personal problem. I will always be there for my students
  • Accept all my students' ideas and opinion. So that, their ideas will develop well
  • Show good and greatest attitude toward my students to become their role model.
  • Have my own mission on education

ICT Essay

Issues or Challenges When ICT is Being Integrated In Teaching and Learning Process

The wide using of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is to improve teaching qualities, learning and management in schools as well to help in increasing the level of our country. The using of ICT in schools are applied to the same level as smart schools. Ministry of Education (MOE) in our country never give up to work hard in improving the qualities of ICT in schools and supplying ICT tools in every schools without any differences between the schools in urban area and rural area. Schools behalf also could report any broken in ICT tools to Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah (PPD). This clearly show the concern of MOE toward education in our country. However, many challenges faced by teachers in using ICT for teaching and learning processes.

The first challenges faced to improve the using of ICT in schools refer to the teachers in the schools. Most teachers still did not competent to use ICT in classes. Sometimes, the level of improved ICT tools are very advanced, not suite to the level of teacher’s knowledge on ICT. This matter does not only happend in schools but also in universities which still have some lecturer that always ask students to set up and prepare ICT tools to them. The ICT tools included computer, notebook, laser printer, pencetak dot matrik, pencetak ink, jet, hub and switch. This tools are among of good branded which are great and durable. Based on my experience when I studied in Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) on 2006 and 2007, there are some teachers that never used the ICT tools provided although the tools are complete and in a good condition. Along the moment that i stilled as a secondary students, because I alway keep changing schools, I noticed that the teachers attitude towards ICT are same in every schools that I registered. Most teachers did not want to use the ICT tools that provided to them. I noticed that the ICT tools are keep located near the wall of the class. This situation influenced students to misuse of it. They make it as something to play. This is very wasteless as the price of the ICT tools is high. Although in MRSM, there are still teachers that still use mah-jong paper as the teaching materials. If there any teachers use ICT tools, they spend quite a long period to begin the operation of the tools, this will waste the teaching time.

The next challenges is some teachers misuse the ICT tools. There are some teachers that just start the video/audio based on topic that they want to teach and students are asked to listen to the videos. I still remember when I was in form 4, my physics teachers asked my classmates and I to look and listen to the video on topic that he want to teach. We felt really sleepy as we did not understand the high standard of English the audio used. Lastly, the class end up without any knowledge we got.

Besides that, there are some teachers that did not know how to use software provided in the computer. There are some teachers that still not confident to use Microsoft Office correctly. When they teaching in urban area, most students are more knowledgeable. This make teachers feel shame and give up to use it.

UPSI Background

Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris was established on 1st May 1997 based on Government gazette P.U.(A) 132 & 133 dated 24th February 1997 under the Order of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (Corporation) and the Order of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (Campus) 1997. However, the history of this University dates back to 1922 when the University was then known as Sultan Idris Training College (SITC).

SITC was set up by the British government and it was the brainchild of the Deputy Director of Malay Schools, Sir Richard Winstedt. SITC was officially opened on November 29, 1922 by the Chief Secretary to the Federation of Malay States, Sir George Maxwell, making it the highest institution of learning exclusively for the Malays at that time.

Graduates of this institution were greatly respected and honoured by the society as it was renowned for producing prominent figures like the ‘Father of Modern Malay Language’, Zainal Abidin Ahmad or popularly known as Za’ba, novelists like Harun Aminurrashid, and Ahmad Bakhtiar and legendaries such as Ibrahim Yaacob and Aminuddin Baki. Tan Sri Awang Had Salleh, a national figure in the field of education and not forgetting the Former Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Abdul Ghaffar Baba are also the ‘products’ of SITC. To many, SITC was regarded as the birthplace of Malay nationalism.

In the early days, students of SITC had to undergo a three-year training course, where they learnt traditional skills and arithmetic. These students were under the tutelage of its teaching staff comprising of four Europeans, one Filipino and ten Malays.

After the 1957 Razak Report, new subjects were introduced and the training course was extended to five years. In addition, the name of the college was changed to Maktab Perguruan Sultan Idris (MPSI).

Traditionally, MPSI accepted only male students. However, in 1976 it began to open its door to the female population admitting its first batch of 150 female students. 1n 1987, the Minister of Education bestowed the institute status upon the country’s oldest teacher training college, and MPSI was thereafter referred to as Institut Perguruan Sultan Idris (IPSI). With its new status, IPSI started to introduce new courses including a twinning programme with Universiti Pertanian Malaysia (currently known as Universiti Putra Malaysia). By then, the number of students, lecturers and support staff had increased in tandem.

It is the aspiration of the Ministry to have only graduate teachers spearheading both the primary and secondary schools in Malaysia. Thus, in order to realise such noble dream, the Ministry of Education granted the university status to IPSI on 1st May 1997.

THE CAMPUS

Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah campus is located at the border of Perak and Selangor in Tanjong Malim on a 33ha of land. However, the ground breaking ceremony of the new Sultan Azlan Shah campus has taken place on 24th April 2002 by His Royal Highness the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Yussuf Izzuddin Shah Ghaffarullahu-lah. The new campus will be built on an 800 acres of land located at Behrang Ulu, 5km from its current campus.
